Congress has been on a massive spending binge this week and hope you are shopping and don’t notice the $2 trillion worth of spending….
1. Spending Bill = $1.1 trillion that the President just signed to fund Defense Spending (click here to see good recap by nasdaq.com)
2. “job” bill = $154 billion. It does NOT CREATE “jobs” of course, but rather extends unemployment (again) and extra Social Security payments (remember that bankrupt program?) and ….. give tax credits for energy efficient improvements (many of us already did such improvements for moral/environmental reasons, not for money)—oh, wait that last one does provide jobs….for unions. Charles Payne pointed out on Neil Cavuto that the way Congress (literally) figures it, if you hold a job for one year, that’s “one job” created, but if you keep that job for another year, that’s “two jobs”, etc when they cite their “jobs created or saved” statistics. Click here for Bloomberg/Business Standard Dec 18: “This is nothing short of a taxpayer-funded Christmas shopping spree financed with money borrowed from the Chinese,” said Representative Jerry Lewis of California, the top Republican on the Appropriations Committee…. It’s really “Stimulus 2” but since Americans aren’t buying the idea that the first massive stimulus spending even worked, Congress had to call it something else so they called it the “jobs caucus”. Obama praised the House action: “All over the country this holiday season, Americans who lost their jobs in the Great Recession are looking for work. Today the House answered with some productive ideas to respond to this great need.” Close to 40 Democrats voted against the jobs bill, most of them “Blue Dogs”, a group of fiscally conservative lawmakers. Click here to see a list of major items in the bill from the AP.
3. Hours earlier, lawmakers voted 218-214 to raise the debt ceiling to $12.394 trillion, the 4th increase in 18 months. (Remember, Pelosi bragged Democrats have controlled Congress for 3 years now…)
4. Health Care “reform” = $1 trillion.
